NEW DELHI, Sept. 18 (Xinhua) -- Six members of a family committed suicide by consuming poison in the southern Indian state of Telangana, police said Monday.

"A man, his wife and their children ended their lives by consuming pesticide in their home at Mamillagadda area in the state's Suryapet district late Saturday night," a police official said.

However, their bodies were discovered only Monday morning by neighbors who broke into the house after foul smell started coming.

Cops have ruled out murder and suspect the family took the extreme step owing to severe financial crunch.

"Prima facie it seemed that poverty drove the family to suicide. Their bodies have been sent for an autopsy," the official said.
