MOGADISHU, Sept. 17 (Xinhua) -- A senior Somalian intelligence officer was killed and his body guards injured on Sunday in a drive-by shooting in the capital, Mogadishu, a local official confirmed to Xinhua.

Authorities suspect that the attack, in the capital's Dharkenlay district, was conducted by Al-Shabaab militants, though no one has claimed responsibility yet.

"I can confirm the death of Mohamud Hassan Moalim, security commander of Kahda district," said Kahda District Commissioner Mohamed Ismael.

"He was injured in an attack in Dharkenlay district together with his bodyguards earlier today," Ismael said. "He died in the hospital from critical injuries."

Several fatal attacks targeting security officers have been carried out by Al-Qaeda affiliated militants in the past week in Mogadishu suburbs despite government efforts to pacify the capital.
