RABAT, Sept. 17 (Xinhua) -- Morocco produced 9.6 million tons of cereals in the 2016-2017 crop year, compared to 3.35 a year earlier, the Moroccan ministry of agriculture announced on Sunday.

The production of soft wheat sees the highest increase, up 163 percent to reach 4.8 million tonnes, the ministry said in a statement.

The harvest includes also 2.5 tonnes of durum and 2.2 tonnes of barley, the statement added.

The harvest was less than the expected 10.2 tonnes that was forecast earlier the year.

Rainfall was 15 percent less than an average year, but 51 percent more than last season.

In 2015, Morocco witnessed the worst drought in three decades, impacting severely the 2015-2016 crop year.

Agriculture accounts for more than 15 percent of the economy and the high harvest is expected to boost growth.
