CHICAGO, Sept. 14 (Xinhua) -- A customer shot an armed suspect Wednesday night during his attempted robbery at an auto parts store in Dolton area near Chicago, local media reported.

The 20-year-old man with a gun walked into the Advance Auto Parts store in south suburban Dolton around 8:00 p.m. and tried to rob the store, police said.

A customer said the suspected robber ran at him with a weapon so he opened fire. He told the police the suspect had a gun and he shot the suspect at least once.

The suspect was transported to a local hospital and he underwent a surgery. Now the suspect is still listed in critical condition.

A handgun appeared to have fallen on the sidewalk. One of the store's front doors was shattered by the shooting, with shards of glass covering the ground.

Police said the customer has a gun concealed carry permit and the shooting remains under investigation.
