HARARE, Sept. 14 (Xinhua) -- President Robert Mugabe has appointed Ray Goba as Zimbabwe's second Prosecutor-General (PG).

Goba, who is in his late 50s, has been Acting Prosecutor-General since 2016 when the then incumbent Johannes Tomana was suspended by President Robert Mugabe following allegations of misconduct.

The announcement of his appointment was made through an extra-ordinary Government Gazette published late Wednesday by the Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet Misheck Sibanda.

Tomana, who was Zimbabwe's first Prosecutor-General following the adoption of a new constitution in 2013, now awaits trial at the High Court for alleged criminal abuse of office.

Under the old constitution, the Attorney-General (AG) was responsible for public prosecutions and the provision of legal advice to government.

However, with the passing of the new constitution, the roles were split with the PG taking charge of public prosecutions while the AG remained the government's chief legal advisor.

Tomana was the last AG to hold the dual role.
