S. African stocks firmer Tuesday

JOHANNESBURG, Sept. 12 (Xinhua) -- The Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) continued on the bull run for the second consecutive day on Tuesday.

The all share was up 0.64 percent to 56,366.16 points, with the blue-chip top 40 climbing 0.69 percent to 49,970.85 points at close of the session.

The JSE was supported by industrial and financial shares, but the gold index was 0.82 percent weaker.

Naspers edged up 1.1 percent to R2985, as it gained for the second consecutive day, following an apparent consolidation over the past two weeks.

Sanlam led gains in the broader financial sector, ending a seven-day losing run, and Liberty Holdings found buying support after coming under some pressure in recent weeks.

Retailers were mostly higher, with Mr Price adding 1.99 percent to R184.75.

AngloGold Ashanti was off 2.36 percent to R126.82 and Northam Platinum lost 1.76 percent to R47.52.

Standard Bank lost 0.31 percent to R162.38 and FirstRand was 0.45 percent lower at R54.75. Sanlam, which lost more than 5 percent last week in reaction to a 19 percent profit drop, regained 1.45 percent to R68.4.

Glencore set yet another 52-week high, gaining 2.39 percent to R63.14.

Anglo American was 0.65 percent up at R239.85 and BHP gained 1.3 percent to R248.65. Enditem
