WINDHOEK, Sept. 12 (Xinhua) -- The Communications Regulatory Authority of Namibia (CRAN) has informed all importers, vendors, patent owners and equipment manufacturers of telecommunication equipment that it is their responsibility to obtain a Type Approval certificate before their goods enter the country.
"The original equipment manufacturer outside Namibia may provide a letter of authorization to a local or third party to apply on their behalf. The letter of authorization should clearly state the company name that has been granted permission to apply for type approval in the Republic of Namibia on behalf of the equipment manufacturer," said Festus K. Mbandeka, Chief Executive Officer of CRAN.
Furthermore, the above-mentioned stakeholders need to submit all test reports as outlined in the Type Approval application form.
The purpose of the regulations are to ensure compliance of telecommunications equipment with international standards applicable in Namibia and to prevent any sub-standard equipment that may present health and safety hazards to consumers from entering and being operated in Namibia.
The regulations also seek to protect consumers from products that are incompatible with local networks as well as ensure that the operating frequency of telecommunications equipment and radio apparatus are in conformance with the national frequency band plan in Namibia.
CRAN is the Communications Regulatory Authority of Namibia. It is mandated to regulate telecommunication services and networks, broadcasting services, postal services and the use and allocation of radio spectrum.
