KUALA LUMPUR, Sept. 11 (Xinhua) -- Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah, the Sultan of the Malaysian state of Kedah and the nation's king reigning from 2011 to 2016, passed away on Monday afternoon at the age of 89, the Kedah state government said.

Halim was the first and until now the only Malaysian ruler to hold twice the title, called the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, meaning the monarch and head of state of Malaysia.

Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak extended his condolences on his twitter account, saying he felt sad and sorrowful to receive the news of the death of the Kedah ruler, with whom he said he had an intimate relationship.

Under the unique rotation system, Malaysia's king is passed between nine hereditary state rulers. The current king, Sultan Muhammad V, took the job from Halim last December.
