VALLETTA, Sept. 10 (Xinhua) -- Malta's government will soon launch a consultation on setting a cut-off date or the purchase of all petrol and diesel vehicles, Prime Minister Joseph Muscat said on Sunday.
Joseph Muscat, who was addressing a Labor Party activity to celebrate the first 100 days of this legislature, said vehicle has become the biggest source of pollution in Malta and the government will pave the way to remove those polluters.
"We can be a test bed for such technologies, with Gozo even before Malta," he said. "Within the next generation we must shift completely to cars which run on electricity and alternative fuels."
Some countries such as Netherlands, France and the United Kingdom had set 2025 or 2040 as cut-off dates beyond which no new diesel and petrol vehicles may be bought.
