BRUSSELS, Sept. 7 (Xinhua) -- Some 40 people have been evacuated in a district of Brussels after road collapsed, local media reported Thursday.
The burst of an underground water pipe caused the road collapse in Saint-Josse-ten-Noode, Brussels Region, creating a 36 square meter hole in the middle of the street, said local newspaper Le Soir.
As the ground has become very unstable, Saint-Josse-ten-Noode's Mayor decided to activate the emergency and evacuation plan for security reasons. About 40 people, including 25 children, were evacuated and moved to a sports hall nearby.
Workers from the water distribution company Vivaqua and the railway infrastructure manager Infrabel were called to evaluate the situation.
Some of the railway lines between Brussels-North and Brussels-Luxemburg train stations were flooded, and it will take several days to fix the situation, a member from Infrabel told local newspaper La Libre.
Despite the troubles caused by the incident, no one has been injured and all cars have also been redirected.
