NEW DELHI, Sept. 6 (Xinhua) -- Indian security agencies have launched a massive manhunt to track down an elite bodyguard of main opposition Congress party chief Sonia Gandhi who has gone missing under suspicious circumstances.
The bodyguard belongs to the Special Protection Group (SPG), an elite commando force which gives protection to the current and former prime ministers and their family members as well as the Nehru-Gandhi family, including Sonia Gandhi, her son Rahul and daughter Priyanka.
"The 31-year-old commando, identified as Rakesh Kumar, has gone missing since September 3, two days after he reported for duty at Gandhi's official residence at 10 Janpath Road in south Delhi on his off-day," a senior police official said.
"Neither the SPG bosses nor his family members are aware of his wherabouts. The commando left his mobile phone as well as his service revolver at Gandhi's residence before disappearing under mysterious circumstances. A manhunt has been launched to trace him," the official added.
Kumar's family members have lodged a missing person's complaint with the Delhi police and ruled out any family feud that may have led to his leaving the house without intimating anyone. "We are probing all angles in the case," the official said.
