TRIPOLI, Sept. 5 (Xinhua) -- Italian Interior Minister Marco Minniti on Tuesday met with the eastern-based army commander General Khalifa Haftar in the eastern Libya city Benghazi.

The meeting took place in Haftar's office in Benghazi, a day following a meeting between Haftar and French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian.

No further details of the meeting were available.

An Italian warship arrived in the Libyan capital Tripoli earlier in August based on a request from the UN-backed unity government.

A Libyan navy spokesman said that the ship's visit aims to boost technical cooperation to fight illegal immigration and provide training for Libyan coastguards.

However, Haftar, shortly after the arrival of the warship, threatened to attack any Italian warship that enters Libyan national waters without permission.
