CHICAGO, Sept. 5 (Xinhua) -- Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel declared on Tuesday that the third biggest city in America is a "Trump-free zone" for young immigrants, who may face deportation after the U.S. administration decided to end the DACA program.

U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced Tuesday to rescind the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, known as DACA, an Obama-era program to protect immigrants who were illegally brought to the U.S. as children.

Emanuel told a group of students, including DACA beneficiaries, at a local high school that they have nothing to worry about.

"Chicago, our schools, our neighborhoods, our city...will be a Trump-free zone," announced Emanuel, who once served as White House chief of staff during former president Barack Obama's administration.

The Trump administration has said that it will phase out the program in six months, during which politicians hope to find consensus on a permanent legislative solution to the issue.

Obama responded to the new decision on Tuesday by saying in his Facebook that "To target these young people is wrong -- because they have done nothing wrong."
