KIEV, Sept. 5 (Xinhua) -- The Ukrainian government is launching a project to establish the tourism police -- a specialized law enforcement unit for patrolling the streets of the resort cities, a regional police chief said Tuesday.

"Such police will eliminate the crimes in the resort areas, helping to increase the attractiveness of the cities for tourists," Dmytro Golovin, head of the National Police in Odessa region, said in an interview with the Interfax-Ukraine news agency.

The establishment of the tourism police, first of all, is aimed at enhancing the security of foreigners, who visit Ukraine, Golovin said.

According to him, apart from providing protection for tourists, the specialized police will offer information services.

At the initial stage of the project, the tourist police officers will be deployed in the Ukrainian capital of Kiev, southern Black Sea resort of Odessa and western ancient city of Lviv, Golovin said.
