SINGAPORE, Sept. 5 (Xinhua) -- Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong announced here Tuesday the nomination of Social and Family Development Minister Tan Chuan-Jin as the new speaker of parliament.

According to a statement issued by the Prime Minister's Office, Desmond Lee will become the new head of the Ministry of Social and Family Development.

Tan is poised to become Singapore's 10th parliament speaker next Monday when the house convenes, as the prime minister's People's Action Party holds the majority of seats in the parliament.

Tan will replace former speaker Halimah Yacob, who resigned on Aug. 7 to take part in the presidential election this month.

Tan wrote on Facebook: "I'm glad to accept PM's nomination and hope for my parliamentary colleagues' support."

Tan resigned from the armed forces of Singapore as a brigadier general in March 2011 to enter politics.

He was elected member of parliament for Marine Parade Group Representation Constituency in May 2011 and appointed minister of state for manpower and national development a month later.
