SYDNEY, Sept. 5 (Xinhua) -- Australia defeated Thailand 2-1 at AAMI Park in Melbourne on Tuesday evening in a nail-biting final round of the 2018 Russian World Cup qualifiers.

Despite heavy rain, fierce winds and some desperate Thai defence, it was not enough to contain Australia's powerful attacking lineup, with Tomi Juric (69th minute) and Mathew Leckie (86th minute) getting on the scoresheet, along with Thailand's Pokklaw A-Nan who equalised in 82nd minute.

In the second spot for Asia's group B standings, the Aussies will have an anxious wait as Japan take on Saudi Arabia on Wednesday 3:30 (AEST), in a match that will determine which team will miss out on automatic qualification.
