BARRANQUILLA, Sept. 4 (Xinhua) -- Colombia will attempt to take the initiative from the outset in their crucial World Cup qualifier against Brazil here on Tuesday, according to Cafeteros coach Jose Pekerman.

The match at Estadio Metropolitano will pit the top two sides in South America's 10-team CONMEBOL group against each other.

Brazil are already assured of a place at next year's tournament in Russia, with 36 points from 15 matches. But while Colombia are second with 25 points, they are only two points ahead of fifth-placed Argentina with three qualifiers remaining.

Only the top four teams will earn a direct World Cup berth while the fifth-ranked side will advance to an intercontinental playoff.

"We need to take the initiative, but we can't be desperate," Pekerman told a press conference. "Showing desperation in this type of match can hurt you a lot."

"Against Brazil it won't be enough to play well for a while. We have to maintain a high level for the entire match and be focused constantly in the knowledge that we also have players on the bench who can change the match."

Colombia are likely to recall James Rodriguez for the match after he missed the team's 0-0 draw with Venezuela on Thursday because of a thigh injury.

Brazil will be without Real Madrid left-back Marcelo due to suspension and Inter Milan defender Miranda, who suffered concussion in the team's 2-0 victory over Ecuador on Thursday. Enditem
