DAMASCUS, Sept. 1 (Xinhua) -- As many as 31 Syrian soldiers, who had been taken captives by the rebels, were set free under a regional deal, pan-Arab al-Mayadeen TV reported on Friday.

Ali al-Hilo, a Syrian pilot whose warplane was downed by the rebels in the countryside of Sweida last month, was among those released as well, said the report.

No more details were available, but the report said the release, which took place on Thursday, was part of a regional-backed deal, whose details are unknown.

The Syrian state media outlets didn't comment on the news, but photos of the released soldiers went viral online by pro-government news web pages.
