JAKARTA, Sept. 1 (Xinhua) -- A shallow under sea quake, measuring 6.2 Richter scale jolted West Sumatra province in western parts of Indonesia earlier Friday, but was not potential for tsunami, the meteorology and geophysics agency said.
The quake struck at 00:16 a.m. Friday (1716 GMT Thursday) with epicenter at 80 km northeast Mentawai Island of the province and the depth at 10 km under sea bed, official in charge at the agency Fauzi Maskuri said.
"But, we did not issue a warning for tsunami as the quake was not potential for tsunami," he told Xinhua by phone.
So far, there is no initial report of damages or casualties after the quake, according to him.
Indonesia is prone to quake as it lies on a vulnerable quake-hit zone so called "the Pacific Ring of Fire."
