S. African stocks close firmer as miners rally

JOHANNESBURG, Aug. 31 (Xinhua) -- The Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) was slightly firmer on Thursday with diversified miners rallying, while gold and platinum miners were weaker.

The all share index was up 0.63 percent to 56,522.11 points, with the gold and platinum indices down 1.44 percent and 1.02 percent, respectively. Resources were up 1.18 percent while banks were 0.16 percent lower. Industrials were 0.57 percent firmer.

Glencore, the world's largest producer and trader in copper, was up 0.95 percent to R60.52.

The local currency traded at R13 to the U.S. dollar on Thursday after closing at R12.96 the day before.

Naspers climbed 0.5 percent to R2,924.9. Steinhoff traded 2.65 percent softer at R62.86.

Anglo American rose 2.6 percent to R235.06. Kumba Iron Ore gained 4.85 percent to R217.11.

Wine and spirits producer Distell dropped 2.68 percent to R138.19, after it earlier reported a 15 percent fall in after-tax profit.

Sibanye-Stillwater gave up 2.24 percent to R20.77.

The gold price was down 0.56 percent at 1,316.69 U.S. dollars an ounce and platinum dropped 0.46 percent to 994.77 dollars an ounce. Enditem
