VALLETTA, Aug. 30 (Xinhua) -- Fipronil-tainted eggs have been found in Malta, reported local media on Wednesday.

Malta's Health Directorate said Wednesday evening that eight of 20 samples of eggs contained traces of fipronil after test, which were carried out in German laboratories.

The samples included both imported and locally laid eggs.

The Directorate said that while any use of fipronil is prohibited, the amounts found in the samples were not up to toxicity levels.

But as a precaution,it advised that consumers should not eat more than two eggs a day until further notice.

Malta's Commission for Food Security, the Directorate of Veterinary Services and the Directorate for Environmental Health has already taken steps to stop the sale of contaminated eggs and to conduct further testing.
