Liverpool airport back to normal after lockdown by police for security alert

LONDON, Aug. 29 (Xinhua) -- Britain's Liverpool John Lennon Airport went back to normal after being sealed off by police on Tuesday night in a security alert.

Passengers who has arrived had been kept aboard jets while police dealt with an incident during the lockdown.

In a statement later, Merseyside Police said a man had been detained by police after a suspect item was discovered in luggage.

Police confirmed that officers rushed to the airport following reports of a suspicious item found around 6 p.m. local time. The item was found through routine security checks of a man due to fly out of the airport, police said.

It was examined by specialist EOD officers and following enquiries, found to be a battery pack of unique appearance. The man in possession of the item was detained while these examinations took place.

Working alongside airport security staff, a cordon was put in place within the airport as the enquiries were carried out to ensure that the public were safe at all times.

The incident after several hours ended but police officers remain at the airport to provide reassurance to the public.
