14 IS militants killed in Afghan province

JALALABAD, Afghanistan, Aug. 29 (Xinhua) -- Fourteen militants of Islamic State (IS), including a woman fighter, were killed during airstrikes in Nangarhar, eastern Afghanistan, a local police said Tuesday.

The strikes were launched in Muhmand Murghai and Sat Khan localities of Achin district, Nangarhar province late on Monday, provincial police spokesman Hazrat Hussain Mashreqiwal told Xinhua.

No civilians or security force members were hurt following the the strikes which were conducted by the NATO-led coalition forces. The initial information confirmed that the dead included an IS militants' affiliated woman fighter, the source said.

Achin is the stronghold of IS militants in the province, 120 km east of Afghan capital of Kabul. It has been the scene of clashes between security forces and IS militants since the emergence of IS there in early 2015.

Last week, at least 9 militants were reportedly killed and 13 others wounded during a series of security forces counter-insurgency operations in Bati Kot and Sherzad districts in Nangarhar.
