JERUSALEM, Aug. 28 (Xinhua) -- Israel's President Reuven Rivlin called on United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Monday to take steps against the "anti-Israel discrimination."

"This targeting of Israel, this singling out of the world's only Jewish state, and even actions and statements that threaten to destroy Israel are unacceptable and should come at a price," Rivlin told Guterres during their meeting in Jerusalem.

"No member state in the UN should be allowed to behave like that. These actions weaken cooperation between states and are against the rule of law," he said.

Guterres told Rivlin that during his tenure he will keep the UN convention and ensure Israel will be treated equally.

"Although he sometimes does not agree with Israel's actions, he is still committed to finding ways to seek peace between Israel and the Palestinians," Rivlin said.

Guterres landed at the Ben Gurion Airport outside Tel Aviv on Sunday night for a three-day visit, seeking to find ways to revive the peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians.

His itinerary includes also meetings with Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman, the military's intelligence chief, Herzi Levi, and other senior security officials, who plan to present Guterres with evidence of Iran's alleged attempt to achieve a stronghold in Syria.

Later, Guterres will travel to the West Bank city of Ramallah to meet Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

He is also scheduled to travel to the besieged Gaza Strip, where the UN runs aid programs amid escalating humanitarian crisis.

This is Guterres' first visit to the region since taking office in January.

The visit comes amidst tension between Israel and the UN.

Israel was outraged by a resolution taken by the UN cultural agency UNESCO that, according to Israel, did not acknowledge the Jewish ties to Jerusalem.

Israel also often criticizes the UN peacekeeping force for not taking a harsh stance on the Iran-backed militia of Hezbollah on the Lebanon-Israel border.
