Singapore's manufacturing output jumps 21 pct in July on electronics boost

SINGAPORE, Aug. 25 (Xinhua) -- Singapore's manufacturing industry posted stronger growth of 21 percent year on year in output in July as compared with 13.1 percent in June, extending its growth momentum for the 12th straight month, according to figures issued by Economic Development Board (EDB) on Friday.

On a seasonally adjusted month-on-month basis, Singapore's manufacturing output rose 1 percent in July.

Electronics sector was the best performer in July, posting a surge of 49.4 percent year on year in output in July. In a breakdown, the output of semiconductors, computer peripherals, and information communications and consumer electronics segments went up 67.6 percent, 18.9 percent and 5.1 percent year on year, respectively.

The output of precision engineering sector also saw strong growth of 21.8 percent in July as compared with a year ago, of which machinery and systems segment grew by 25.4 percent on higher demand.

Led by strong export demand for medical devices, the output of the biomedical manufacturing sectors rose 5 percent in July on a yearly basis.

Meanwhile, the output of the chemicals sector saw an increase of 4.8 percent, mostly driven by the petrochemicals segment, which rose 20.3 percent year on year on low base in the corresponding period of last year.

The transport engineering sector posted the lowest growth pace in July, with its total output edging up 2.3 percent year on year. The output of the land transport and aerospace segments expanded 21 percent from a year ago while that of the marine and offshore engineering segment remained weak, declining 9.1 percent.
