KIEV, Aug. 24 (Xinhua) -- An attempted murder was likely behind the explosion in the center of the Ukrainian capital, which injured three people during the Independence Day celebrations Thursday, Kiev police said.

The investigators have opened a criminal proceeding into the explosion on charges of "attempted murder, committed in a way, which endangers the lives of other people," the police said in a statement.

The explosion occurred at 2:06 p.m. local time (GMT 1106) at the Grushevskovo street, near the Khreschatyk street, where a military parade was held earlier in the day.

Initial media reports have suggested that two people were injured in the explosion, but later police confirmed that two women and a man have received injuries in the incident. All those affected are the members of the same family.

The identity of the affected people and the severity of their injuries remain unknown.

Further investigation is underway.
