BAGHDAD, Aug. 24 (Xinhua) -- Up to 25 Islamic State (IS) militants were killed in airstrike by Iraqi aircraft on IS post near the Iraqi-Syrian border, the Iraqi military said on Thursday.

Based on intelligence reports, the Iraqi aircraft bombarded an IS post at Abu Saad farm near the city of al-Qaim, some 470 km west of the Iraqi capital of Baghdad, the Iraqi Joint Operations Command (JOC) said in a statement.

The Iraqi aircraft frequently carried out airstrikes on IS headquarters and their posts in and near the city of al-Qaim as well as the nearby towns and villages which are still under IS control in Iraq's western province of Anbar.

The latest airstrike came as the Iraqi security forces backed by anti-IS international coalition are carrying out an offensive to drive out the IS militants from its stronghold in and around Tal Afar in Iraq's northern province of Nineveh.
