LILONGWE, Aug. 24 (Xinhua) -- Malawi will on August 29 launch its first ever National Plan of Action against Trafficking in Persons (2017-2022) along with the national commemoration of World Day against Trafficking in Persons.

According to a statement released by the country's Ministry of Home Affairs and Internal Security, the national plan of action is designed to provide a road map for the operationalization of the Trafficking in Persons Act which the country enacted in 2015.

"This is an important document for Government and all its partners as it represents our determination towards combating trafficking in persons and effective enforcement of the Traficking in Persons Act," read part of the statement signed by the Secretary for the country's Home Affairs ministry, Samuel Madula.

The statement further states that the Action Plan is promoting prevention of trafficking in persons, support and social protection of victims, investigation and prosecution of trafficking offences and partnership, and coordination and sustainable financing.

In 2013, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed July 30 of every year as a day when nations across the world should raise awareness on the situation of human trafficking victims and for the promotion and protection of their rights.

The National Plan of Action development process and launch have been technically and financially supported by the Norwegian Church Aid, SADC Secretariat and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime.
