TBILISI, Aug. 23 (Xinhua) -- Georgia's Defense Ministry and the United States European Command signed a memorandum of understanding on strengthening Georgia's defense capabilities here Wednesday.
According to the statement of the Defense Ministry, the memorandum envisages cooperation in implementing the Georgia Defense Readiness Program, which is part of the framework agreement on U.S.-Georgia security cooperation from 2016 to 2019.
The memorandum aims to further promote the development of Georgia's defense system, said Georgia's Defense Ministry.
"Together with our American counterparts, we are planning to form, equip and train nine battalions during the next three years in order to boost our defense and make Georgia a safer country in the future," Georgia's Defense Minister Levan Izoria said after the signing ceremony.
Maj. Gen. David W. Allvin, director of strategy and policy for the United States European Command, signed the memorandum.
