ATHENS, Aug. 23 (Xinhua) -- To crack down on tax dodging, Greece's finance ministry wants to launch a "receipt lottery", handing out up to one million euros (1.17 million U.S. dollars) per month to lucky consumers who pay with plastic, Greek national news agency AMNA reported Wednesday.

The government is expected to issue a ministerial decision in early September that paves the way for the cash-prize lottery, according to the report, which cited ministry sources.

The plan envisages an average of 1,000 winners each month who will be awarded 1,000 euros each for transactions made using credit/debit cards and other plastic money, according to the report.

The hope is that the incentive will encourage consumers to request receipts.

In recent years, tax inspectors have found that Greek consumers prefer to pay with cash and get a discount when making a purchase in return for the seller not issuing a receipt. (1 euro = 1.17 US dollars)
