Truck-pickup van collision kills 10 in India

NEW DELHI, Aug. 21 (Xinhua) -- At least 10 people were killed and two others injured Monday when a truck collided with a pickup van in eastern Indian state of Odisha, officials said.

The accident took place near Bhawanipali in Sambalpur district, about 274 km northwest of Bhubaneswar, the capital of Odisha.

"Today in a collision between truck and a pickup van here, 10 people were killed and two others injured," an official at collector's office, Sambalpur, told Xinhua. "The two injured are undergoing treatment at district hospital."

The deceased included women and a child, officials said.

Reports said the impact of collision killed four people on the spot, while six others succumbed to their injuries at hospital.

According to officials, the victims were returning from the Kalpeshwar temple.

Following the accident, the driver of the truck reportedly fled the spot. Meanwhile, police registered a case in the accident and launched a manhunt to nab the driver.

Odisha Chief minister Naveen Patnaik has announced a compensation of 3,119 U.S. dollars to family of each killed in the accident.

Deadly road accidents are common in India due to overloading, bad condition of roads and reckless driving.
