NEW DELHI, Aug. 21 (Xinhua) -- Nearly 20 sheep were killed and over 10 other animals injured in a road accident in the northern Indian state of Haryana Monday, police said.
"The accident occurred when a herd of 150 sheep was run over by a speeding car while they were crossing a national highway near Juglan village close to the town of Hisar in Haryana, escorted by a shephard," a police official said.
While 20 sheep died on the spot, 10 others sustained injuries, the official said, adding that a veterinarian has been called from Hisar to treat the injured animals.
The car's driver has been booked for rash and negligent driving, based on a complaint by the shephard, the police official said.
"Efforts are also on to identify the car and nab the driver who fled the spot after hitting the animals," he added.
