HOUSTON, Aug. 19 (Xinhua) -- Protesters marched the streets of Houston Saturday afternoon for the removal of a Confederate statue.

Houston Police Department (HPD) on Friday said the violence that erupted last week in Charlottesville, Virginia won't happen in Houston.

Police Chief Art Acevedo said, "We will not stand idly by watching anyone deface or destroy public property or private property, or attack and physically injure other individuals."

Black Lives Matter Houston organized a protest to call for the removal of the "Spirit of the Confederacy" statue in a Houston downtown park.

HPD gave no specifics on the number of officers who will be at the protest, but the police are preparing for any scenarios to protect the heritage and prevent any violations of law from happening.
