WASHINGTON, Aug. 19 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. Muslims, like Americans overall, were increasingly concerned about global extremism, said a new Pew Research Center survey released earlier this week.

The survey showed that about 82 percent of the U.S. Muslims said they were concerned about extremism committed in the name of Islam worldwide, of which 66 percent said they were "very" concerned.

The figure was similar to the share of the general public that felt the same way, which were about 83 percent of the total.

Only about one-in-six U.S. Muslims and 15 percent of Americans overall said that they were "not too" or "not at all" concerned.

The study said that the figures in both groups were up 10 percentage points compared with the last survey conducted by Pew in 2011.

The new survey also revealed that the female U.S. Muslims were particularly worried about the global extremism in the name of Islam, with 89 percent expressing fear over the issue.

Meanwhile, compared with general public (59 percent), Muslim Americans (76 percent) were more likely to say that targeting and killing civilians to further a political, social or religious cause was never "justifiable."
