Windhoek, Aug. 18 (Xinhua) -- Namibia's environment ministry is planning a tourist safety strategy following recent attacks on tourists in the country.

Environment Minister Pohamba Shifeta made the announcement at a media briefing in Windhoek on Friday.

He said the ministry had already established a committee to look at the safety of tourists in Namibia.

"The ministry in collaboration with all relevant stakeholders plan to develop a comprehensive tourist safety strategy that will set out measures to curb this phenomenon that is on an increase before it totally destroys our economy," he said.

He urged the country to ensure the safety of tourists and visitors.

"We as Namibians must develop a positive and more appreciative approach towards our tourists by changing our mindsets and attitudes so that tourists will not feel threatened," he said.

Last week, A family of four German tourists survived an attempted hijacking and robbery just after arriving in the country.

Meanwhile, Namibian police commissioner in charge of crime and investigation Sylvanus Ngishindimbwa said that the police will also establish tourism protection units within the regions.
