OTTAWA, Aug. 17 (Xinhua) -- Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau Thursday condemned the terrorist attack in Barcelona, Spain, in which 13 were killed and more than 100 injured around 5:30 p.m. local time Thursday.

Trudeau said "Canada condemns today's terror attack in Barcelona -- our hearts, sympathies and support are with the victims and their families."

He added in a statement that "Canada will continue working with the international community to fight terrorism and build a world where we can all feel safe and secure."

The attack in the Spanish city was the country's deadliest since 2004, when al-Qaida-inspired bombers killed 192 people in co-ordinated attacks on Madrid's commuter trains.

After the attack, the Canadian Ministry of Foreign Affairs called on Canadians to avoid the Las Ramblas tourist area in Barcelona and anyone who is already there should stay indoors and follow the instructions of the authorities.

There is no reporting on whether any Canadians are among the victims. The attack happened just over a kilometre from Canada's consulate in Barcelona.

The Canadian ministry also urged Canadians in the Spanish city to monitor local media, including social media, for information and contact the local consulate or the Emergency Watch and Response Centre in Ottawa for help when it is needed.
