BARCELONA, Aug. 17 (Xinhua) -- Two persons have been arrested in connection with a terror attack in Spain, in which a white van rams crowds in Barcelona's iconic Las Ramblas tourist area on Thursday afternoon.

Thirteen people were confirmed dead and more than 100 others injured, with some of them in very serious condition, Catalan interior minister Joaquim Forn said on Twitter.

"We are working to find out their identities," he tweeted.

Neither of the two detainees, however, was the driver of the white van, who was still on the run, according to local police.

Of the two detainees, one was arrested in Ripoll and another one in Alcanar, where a blast occurred on Wednesday killing one person and injuring seven others. Spanish police said the blast had a connection with the attack at Las Ramblas.

One of the detainees was named Driss Oukabir, who told the police his papers would have been robbed. Spanish media reported that his brother, a 18-year-old man, would have stolen his papers and could be involved in the attack.

In addition, one person was shot dead by police in a shootout after the man did not stop at a security control injuring two police officers from Catalonia's regional police, Mossos d'Esquadra.

The man had Spanish nationality and would not have any relation with the attack, the police said.
