HARARE, Aug. 16 (Xinhua) -- Zimbabwean Information Minister Chris Mushowe said Wednesday that Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa who is currently hospitalized in South Africa is recovering well.
He allayed fears that the VP's life could be in danger, stating that he is fine and in good spirits.
The Zimbabwean government was receiving daily updates on Mnangagwa's health, he said.
Mushowe dismissed "mischievous" rumors on social media alleging that the VP's sickness was due to poisoning after he ate ice cream from a dairy company owned by President Mugabe's family.
Mnangagwa fell sick while at a rally in Gwanda, Matabeleland South last Saturday after which he was immediately airlifted to a medical facility in Gweru, Midland before being flown to South Africa for further treatment the next day.
The VP was vomiting and had diarrhea when he was rushed to hospital, according to Health Minister David Parirenyatwa.
"In fact, the VP did not eat the ice cream and I don't know where this (social media rumors) is coming from. Doctors think he ate stale food," Mushowe said.
