UNITED NATIONS, Aug. 14 (Xinhua) -- UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Monday condemned the terrorist attack in Ouagadougou, capital city of Burkina Faso, that killed 18 people.

"The secretary-general stresses that there can be no justification for such acts of indiscriminate violence. He reiterates the support of the United Nations to Burkina Faso in its fight against violent extremism and terrorism," UN deputy spokesman Farhan Haq quoted the UN chief as saying.

The secretary-general also reaffirmed UN's commitment to the countries of the G5 Sahel as they scale up efforts to tackle multiple security challenges in order to promote peace and development in the sub-region, said Haq in a statement.

France and the five African countries -- Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, Mauritania and Niger, agreed last month to launch a multinational military force to fight Islamist militants in the Sahel region.

A group of gunmen attacked a Turkish restaurant in downtown Ouagadougou on Sunday night, leaving 18 people dead and many others wounded.

The UN secretary-general extended condolences to the government and people of Burkina Faso and wished a speedy recovery of the wounded.
