SEOUL, Aug. 14 (Xinhua) -- South Korean President Moon Jae-in on Monday placed his emphasis on peace on the Korean Peninsula amid the rhetoric war between the United States and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK).
Moon said at a regular meeting with his senior secretaries that the nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsular must be resolved peacefully against all meanderings, according to the presidential Blue House.
On this point, he noted that South Korea and the United States were on the same page though security situations got significantly grave on the peninsula and in its surrounding regions.
Pyongyang warned Washington last week that it could strike the waters 30 to 40 km off the coast of the U.S. island of Guam in the Pacific by the use of its intermediate-range ballistic missile Hwasong-12.
Hours before the warning, U.S. President Donald Trump said that if the DPRK continues threats against his country, Pyongyang would be met with "fire and fury."
The DPRK test-fired what it called an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) twice in July, lofting the Hwasong-14 as high as over 3,700 km and flying it as far as about 1,000 km in the latest test-launch.
Amid the exchange of belligerent rhetoric between the United States and the DPRK, tensions ran high on the peninsula.
Moon stressed that a war must never break out again on the peninsula, reiterating his government's basic position that peace and stability should be maintained on the peninsula and that all-out efforts would be made to prevent the current situation from developing into a serious crisis.
He said the South Korea-U.S. alliance was an alliance to maintain peace, adding that peace would not be brought to the peninsula by exercising military might.
The president noted that though negotiations would be hard to achieve and take time, peace should be achieved through negotiations.
