WINDHOEK, Aug. 13 (Xinhua) -- An Argentinian professional hunter was trampled to death by an elephant Saturday, police in Namibia said.

They also identified the professional hunter as Jose Monzalvez aged 46.

Police confirmed the incident Sunday, saying that Monzalvez had a hunting permit.

Monzalvez, who worked for an oil company in Brazil, the police said, was part of a group of trophy hunters - two Argentinians and three Namibians tracking down a herd of elephants in the Kalkfeld area about 260 kilometers from Windhoek, the Namibian capital.

According to the police, the elephant that trampled Monzalvez saw the hunters from a distance and chased them.

Monzalvez was, unfortunately, unable to escape, the police said.
