Fipronil-contaminated eggs found in Poland

WARSAW, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) -- Eggs potentially contaminated by Fipronil has been detected in Poland, officials said on Friday.

These eggs, which are about 40,000 in total, will be destroyed or returned to a German supplier, said Jan Bondar, a spokesman of Poland's Chief Sanitary Inspectorate.

According to Bondar, the eggs had been detected in three Polish provinces but had not reached customers.

The European Commission said Friday that the Fipronil-contaminated eggs have been found in 15 European Union (EU) countries, including Poland.

Tens of millions of eggs have been withdrawn from shops in several EU countries, and Hundreds of farms have been shut down.

Fipronil is an insecticide, which used to kill ticks and mites, can be used in the European Union for pets but not for food production.
