Chinese shares close lower Friday

BEIJING, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) -- Chinese stocks closed lower on Friday, dampened by nonferrous metal, coal, iron and steel stocks.

The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index dropped 1.63 percent to close at 3,208.54 points, while the Shenzhen Component Index closed 1.81 percent lower at 10,291.35 points.

Trading volume on the two bourses expanded to 536 billion yuan (about 80 billion U.S. dollars) from 524 billion yuan Thursday.

The ChiNext Index, which tracks China's NASDAQ-style board of growth enterprises, lost 0.66 percent to close at 1,742.14 points.

Nonferrous metal experienced the largest drops. China Northern Rare Earth Group High-tech Co. Ltd shed 8.34 percent to 18.35 yuan, while Yunnan Chihong Zinc and Germanium Co., Ltd lost 9.71 percent to 7.53 yuan.

Iron and steel stocks also declined. Fangda Special Steel Technology Co. Ltd plunged by the daily limit of 10 percent to 13.11 yuan.

Defense industry stocks bucked the trend. Bestway Marine and Energy Technology Co. Ltd soared by the daily limit to 9.12 yuan. North Industries Group Red Arrow Co. Ltd rose 5.79 percent to 11.88 yuan.
