MADRID, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) -- The Spanish labor union UGT (Union General de Trabajadores) confirmed on Thursday that staff who carry out security checks at La Coruna and Santiago de Compostela airports are to begin a series of partial stoppages on Aug. 20.

Security services at La Coruna airport are provided by the company Eulen, whose workers are carrying out similar action at Barcelona's El Prat airport, where a series of one-hour stoppages caused long queues on Aug. 4, 6, and 7.

Meanwhile, security workers at Santiago de Compostela airport are provided by security company Prosegur.

UGT says the strike has been called over labor conditions and "a working model in the sector based solely on competition over prices."

Workers at both airports are demanding a bonus for working the x-ray machine in the security hall, while those at La Coruna want a limit to hours on afternoon shifts. Santiago security workers want to be paid for a minimum of six hours per shift, and access to free parking at the airport.

Meanwhile, security workers at El Prat are to vote on Thursday evening over whether to accept a proposal made by the Catalan regional authority (Generalitat) to improve conditions. If they accept the proposals, which have already been accepted by Eulen, planned strikes for the coming days will be called off, but if not, there will be further stoppages on Friday and Sunday, followed by an all-out strike on Monday.
