BERLIN, Aug. 9 (Xinhua) -- The environmental non-governmental organization Deutsche Umwelthilfe (DUH) launched a request for the carmaker Porsche to be fined a total of 110 million euros (129 million U.S. dollars)on Wednesday.

DUH director Juergen Resch said that his organization wanted to create a "precedent" for the German punishment of firms which sold diesel vehicles whose nitrogen oxide emissions exceed official pollution thresholds. Porsche was unwilling to comment.

In late July, the Federal Minister for Transport Alexander Dobrindt (CSU) had ordered the recall of 22,000 Porsche Cayenne vehicles with 3.0-liter TDI motors across Europe. New cars of the specific motor type are currently banned from sale.

"Every citizen and small entrepreneur has to abide by the law," Resch said in his statement. " If they are caught committing a transgression against traffic regulations, they face a fine in relation to the severity of their crime. This principle must also apply to carmakers which so far have escaped any punishment for the diesel emissions scandal in Germany."Enditem
