MADRID, Aug. 9 (Xinhua) -- The Spanish government delegation at the enclave of Ceuta announced Wednesday that it was closing the border to goods traffic for a week following a series of attempts by migrants to force their way into the city.

The decision means a stop to all goods vehicles entering the enclave, as well as porters who are carrying goods on their backs.

The delegation explained that the decision was made "to give priority to security forces to impede the incessant attempts " by immigrants to enter the enclave.

In recent days, there have been four attempts by migrants to break into Ceuta which is effectively European Union (EU) territory. A total of 260 of them successfully crossed the frontier.

In the latest attempt, around 1,000 people on Tuesday tried to climb over the double six-meter razor wire edged fence which separates the Spanish territory from Morocco.

Security forces claimed the migrants used violence in that incident, with "stones, lances and metal poles," all used in an assault which left three Spanish Civil Guards injured.

Meanwhile, Monday saw 187 migrants force their way through a frontier post in the early hours of the morning after taking border police by surprise.

Security forces were also on alert on Wednesday morning after receiving news of a further expected assault on the frontier, but in the end, Moroccan forces were able to disperse groups of migrants in the area and the attempt never materialized.
