MADRID, Aug. 9 (Xinhua)-- More than 7 percent of Spanish women give birth to their first child at the age of 40 or later, which is the second highest figure in EU countries, according to a report released by Eurostat on Tuesday.

The study by the EU's statistical body shows that in 2015, 7.4 percent of women in Spain who gave birth to their first child were aged 40 or more.

Among EU countries, only Italy has a higher number, with 8 percent of women becoming first-time mothers after their 40th birthday, while the average age for a woman who has her first child in the European Union is 29.

Meanwhile, the study shows that in 2015, 61.9 percent of women aged between 30 and 39 in Spain gave birth for the first time, the highest percentage in the entire EU, way ahead of Greece, where 57.2 percent of women aged between 30 and 39 had their first child.

High unemployment and low wages force many young people in Spain to live at home with their parents until their 30s, according to studies by the Spanish Institute of Statistics.

It also shows that in 2015 the average age for people to get married in Spain was 33.7.
