LONDON, Aug. 5 (Xinhua) -- Lithuania's Andrius Gudzius claimed the men's discus throw title at the World Athletics Championships here on Saturday.

Gudzius, 26, won the gold with a personal best throw of 69.21 meters. Sweden's Daniel Stahl was second with 69.19 and American Mason Finley took bronze with 68.03.

Gudzius, who finished 12th in last year's Rio Olympics, could not believe he had won the title.

"Every athlete must be dreaming about the world title and I managed it tonight," he said. "I still cannot believe it and I think I need some time to understand what has just happened. I am so delighted. I was thinking about a medal but I did not expect gold.

"Everybody in my country was expecting a medal from me and I am happy to bring one home.

"I was so nervous before the first attempt, I did not know what to expect. But in the second, I just knew I needed to send it far."

Stahl, who was fifth two years ago in Beijing, was happy with the result instead.

"I am really proud," he said. "Me and my coach have been working really hard. This silver medal is really great.

"I am very happy for my discus colleagues, for Andrius and Mason. I will try to get better every year."
