THE HAGUE, Aug. 5(Xinhua) -- Reigning Dutch champions Feyenoord beat Vitesse after penalties in Rotterdam to capture the Dutch Super Cup, the so-called Johan Cruyff Schaal, on Saturday.

In their own stadium De Kuip Feyenoord took an early lead against Dutch Cup winners Vitesse in the traditional opening of the Dutch soccer season. Jens Toornstra hit home a cross by Jean-Paul Boetius.

Vitesse came back in the second half after the video referee interfered to award Vitesse a penalty after a foul on Tim Matavz.

Alexander Buttner converted the penalty and made it 1-1. This was also the score after 90 minutes, which meant the match had to be decided through penalties, because the Dutch Super Cup has no extra time. After Matavz and Milot Rashica missed Vitesse's first attempts and Feyenoord scored four the Cup went to Rotterdam (4-2).

Feyenoord claimed the Dutch Super Cup for the third time in history. The Rotterdam based giants had also captured the trophy in 1991 and 1999.

Next weekend the 2016/2017 season of the Dutch top flight, the Eredivisie, starts with Vitesse playing at home to NAC Breda on Saturday and Feyenoord hosting FC Twente on Sunday. Enditem
