ANKARA, Aug. 2 (Xinhua) -- Turkish military said on Wednesday that three Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) militants were killed Tuesday in airstrikes by its air forces in northern Iraq.

In a statement, the Turkish General Staff said the air operation was launched in the Zap and Metina regions of Iraq.

The PKK militants were planning attacks on Turkey's security checkpoints along the border with Iraq, the statement said.

The air raid also destroyed shelters and weapon emplacements of the outlawed organization, it added.

The PKK, listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the United States and the EU, resumed its armed campaign against the Turkish government in July 2015.

Since then, some 1,200 Turkish security personnel and civilians have died in PKK attacks, with more than 7,000 PKK members killed during government operations across Turkey and northern Iraq.
